Reddit has fallen. Economists predict that the values of Linux, Ayn Rand's estate, and fedoras have plummeted. Joking aside, the Reddit API protests are a sign of the times. While Reddit isn't the first, it's a reminder that the internet of yore is gone. We no longer have discussion-based semi-anonymous third spaces.
The internet is one of the greatest inventions in human history. The privilege to immediately transmit information across the globe is amazing. Big banks, private interest groups, and bad actors are taking that away from you. It was cool while it lasted.
The lack of money is the primary reason we see so many spaces disappearing. The censorship it brings is just an added bonus for these bad actors.
The internet is pretty lame now - IRL is the new internet. The events are cooler. I used to feel like I could only be myself on the internet. Now, it feels like IRL is the last bastion of authenticity.
