On Valentine’s Day I saw Takeshi Miike’s/Murakami’s Audition. There was a request that I write a spoiler filled analysis part 2. 

What I like about Ryu Murakami’s stories is that the twist is always a jarring contrast to the slow build-up he writes. This was the case in Audition.

I went to audition with the understanding that it would be a film about a scorned woman turned murderer. The film was ultimately an intellectual version of that trope.

Asami, is not the villain. Scene by scene we hold our breaths with anticipation of her as villain but Audition refuses to be that lazy. This becomes evident in the final act of the film when we find out the cause of Asami’s trauma and we get that Murakami twist.
