wow, this is a great take! I'm a bit of a detached millennial and I'm only somewhat aware of the stay at home girlfriend trend, but the streaming/OF thing is super apparent in cosplay and gaming. You make such a good point about marriage and the legal rights you forfeit by committing yourself to a stay at home life without it. I feel similar about OF and other gig economy sex work, and even some of the "be your own boss" girlboss rhetoric. You lose out on a lot of security by working for yourself alone, and I think a lot of women do lie about the extent of their success in these industries, not disclosing the family or partner support they're relying on to live comfortably. I try not to judge these girls, but I definitely worry for their stability and futures, having been raised firmly in the "be your own white man" camp of millennial feminism myself
I definitely agree! It's also so important what you do in your twenties has a big impact on your future. I definitely wish I was a bit more serious earlier in life, but thankful I have more of a plan now.
